The International Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Association was announced at the 10th International Biliary Association held in Nice, France on September 11, 1988. The World Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Association was established in Sweden in 1986. In 1990, the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association and the World Hepato-Biliary Association held a meeting of standing committee members in Paris, France. The meeting decided to merge the two associations into one, and the new name will follow the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (IHPBA). , including different specialties such as hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, gastroenterology, hepatology, imaging and pediatrics. The decision was approved at the first plenary meeting of the World Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Association held in Hong Kong on June 8, 1992, and was approved at the first plenary meeting of the International Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Association held in San Diego, USA on September 1 of the same year approved. The newly established International Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Society was officially announced at the first general meeting held in Boston, USA on May 31, 1994.

In August 2003, Academician Wu Mengchao and Professor Chen Xiaoping were invited to India to participate in the sixth annual meeting of the Asian Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Association. During the meeting, Professor Chen Xiaoping asked for the opinion of Academician Wu Mengchao on the idea of establishing the Chinese branch of the International Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Association, and Mr. Wu expressed his support . After returning to China, Academician Qiu Fazu was consulted on this matter, and Academician Qiu Fazu also expressed his support. Afterwards, the approval and support of relevant persons in charge of the Chinese Society of Surgery, such as Du Ruyu, Zhu Yu, Leng Xisheng, and Professor Zhao Yupei, were obtained. On this basis, the opinion of dozens of well-known experts in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery (including Academician Huang Zhiqiang, Academician Tang Zhaoyou and Academician Zheng Shusen) as well as experts in gastroenterology, liver disease and radiology from all over the country was further extensively sought, and they all gave active support . In this way, in September 2003, I talked with Academician Liu Yunyi, the chairman of the International Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Association, about China’s desire to establish the Chinese branch of the International Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Association, and then formally submitted an application to the Secretariat of the International Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Association. In November of the same year, the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association officially sent a letter approving the establishment of the Chinese Chapter of the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association in China. The English name is The Chinese Chapter of the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association. At present, the number of experts recommended by various parties to participate in the China Branch of the International Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Association: 170 mainland hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery experts, 15 hepatology experts, 18 radiology experts, 12 abdominal ultrasound experts, 25 gastroenterology experts, infectious diseases There are 28 scientific experts and 25 related experts from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, a total of 293. On December 3-6, 2004, the first academic seminar of the China Branch of the International Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Association was held in Wuhan; on October 14-17, 2006, the second academic seminar of the Chinese Branch of the International Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Association was held in Wuhan. The third academic conference of the China Branch of the International Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Association was held at the Shanghai International Convention Center from April 12 to 13, 2008.
The first academic conference of the China Branch of the International Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Association was successfully held in Wuhan from December 3 to 6, 2004. This conference invited Academicians Wu Jieping, Vice Chairman of the Chinese People’s Congress, Qiu Fazu, Wu Mengchao, Huang Zhiqiang, and Tang Zhaoyou, Professors Liu Yunyi and Jim Toouli, former presidents of the International Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Association, Professor Markus W Büchler, President-elect of the International Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Association, and European Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Association. The chairman of the association, Professor Broelsch, etc. attended the conference in person, and other foreign scholars attended the conference and gave wonderful speeches. At the same time, domestic liver disease experts (internal medicine), imaging experts and experts from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan were invited to give special lectures. More than 1,000 experts and representatives attended the conference, and more than 400 papers were received.
During the conference, experts held a number of special discussions on liver diseases, organ transplantation, minimally invasive surgical techniques, biliary tract diseases, pancreatic diseases, laparoscopic surgical techniques, etc. focusing on cutting-edge, hot and difficult issues in the field of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery at home and abroad. The meeting was unanimously appreciated by domestic and foreign experts and delegates, and was well received by the International Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Association. The meeting was a great success. In recognition of the outstanding contributions made by Academicians Qiu Fazu, Wu Mengchao, Huang Zhiqiang, Tang Zhaoyou, Zhu Yu, Wu Zaide and Professor Du Ruyu to hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery in China, the conference awarded a gold medal.
